blitzer in newtown, connecticut. we'd like to welcome our viewers from the united states and around the world. today students took their first tentative steps towards some semblance of normality. most of the schools reopened but not the sandy hook elementary school. we learned today that the students of that school, the site of friday's last shooting, won't resume classes until january. also, the connecticut's medical examiner revealed that nancy lanza was shot four times in the head while she was sleeping. he also says adam lanza died of a single gunshot wound to the head fired from a handgun. significantly, the medical examiner also disclosed that he's been told lanza was diagnosed with asperger's syndrome. officials say they are working to determine whether that diagnosis was correct. our national correspondent, susan candiotti, spoke with an acquaintance of the la lanzas a she's joining us now. >> reporter: wolf, this is the home where the shooter adam lanza lived with his mother and whether police say he shot and killed his mother as she was sleeping in her bedroom. as you indi
of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you

united unlocked. nyse euronext. unlocking the world's potential. >>> bishop jakes, i have time for one last question as we talk about newtown, remembering. your church does a lot of outreach into the community and sometimes i think as americans we're conflicted about mental health. we think people definitely should be getting treatment. we don't necessarily vote to pay for it. we turn away from people i think who often have mental health issues because we don't want to get in people's business. what should we be doing for not in this case, we don't know enough about the shooter but in general what would you advise people to be doing for their fellow brothers and sisters. >> i'm so glad you asked me the question. i think it's important we press on congress to provide resources so people who need mental health can get the appropriate treatment that we need. i caution people that you don't have to have a fre existing mental condition to implode emotionally through stress. we have to age old biblical question am i my brother's keeper, the answer is yes. we have to be aware who we work with
this in the next day or two. i know that the community of new town is working with united way on this very subject as well and has set up a fund there. second, i've signed an executive order that will permit monroe and newtown to enter into an agreement concerni ining the us a monroe extra school they have, surplus school, that will allow that school to be used immediately and suspends some of the public notice aspects of entering into that agreement. obviously, this is an emergency. i was prepared to declare a separate emergency, but the reality is, we're still under hurricane sandy emergency so i used that as the basis to execute that executive order. third, i'm asking friday, december 21st, at 9:30 a.m., exactly one week after the horror began to unfold in newtown, that the entire state observe a moment of silence. i'd like to ask houses of worship with the ability to play bells to do so. 26 bells for the beautiful children and 6 wonderful adults who were killed at the school on that day. i'll be sending a letter of notification to all of the other governors through the nga to ask them to ask t
